Limb Lengthening

Femoral Lengthening

The monolateral device shown in the sketch, known as an Orthofix fixator is less bulky than the circular fixator, and is used for lengthening the femur when little or no angulation is present. The x-ray shows a 9 centimeter discrepancy secondary to a growth plate fracture at age 5.

X-ray at 5 and 12 weeks of lengthening. Notice the spontaneous formation of bone in the gap created by corticotomy.

This x-ray shows the equalization of leg lengths by the lengthening process.
