Limb Lengthening

Left Humeral Lengthening with Orthofix Monolateral
Limb Reconstruction System and Automated Distraction.

Allie has an 8 cm arm length discrepancy secondary to a childhood fracture of her upper humeral growth plate. This also resulted in deformity near the
growth plate, illustrated by the x-ray on the left. The x-ray on
the right shows straightening of
the deformity with a monolateral fixator and preparation for lengthening.

The x-ray demonstrates 8 cm lengthening with the Orthofix device. This photograph (of another patient having a similar procedure) shows the appearance of an automated distractor on the Orthofix limb reconstruction device in a typical patient undergoing this treatment. Since the patient in the above photograph is larger than Allie, an additional pin is placed in the upper segment for greater stability.

Her external fixation was required for four months. This x-ray shows the healing six months after the lengthening.
